The roots of exhibitions in America rest deeply on the notion of collecting and collections. Pete Glover’s upcoming art exhibition, Junk Pirate, harks back to a time when Charles W. Peale’s American Museum began displaying a variety of items that were considered random objects of novelty.  By presenting seemingly disparate objects from everyday life, Glover manages to form a cohesive and amusing gaze into American culture.

Pete Glover is an artist, a curator, a thrift store employee, and a pirate of junk. Sifting through piles of discarded commodities requires a keen eye and an aesthetic for artistic relationships, and Glover is constantly curating his carefully selected boon. Collecting is a process that relies as much upon chance discoveries as it does on incisive gathering. Over the past half decade, “Junk Pirate” has manifested into a zine, a blog, a website, and a self-published book, all of which document and put various aspects of Glover’s collections on display.

Beginning May 29th, 2010, the Compound Gallery in Oakland will exhibit Pete Glover’s Junk Pirate Found Art Exhibition, a collection of collections. In this solo show, assortments of commonplace items such as board game money, antiquated video game controllers, classroom pencil sharpeners, honey-bear bottles, or even found personal ephemera are exploited for their aesthetic, as well as nostalgic, properties.  These arrangements of selected objects communicate with a common consumer language we all speak and often invoke the visual langue of biological and anthropological vitrines. With an obsession for the mundane and a talent for presentation, Glover’s exhibition is staged with challenging conceptual undertones to match the superficial familiar images of the everyday objects.

In addition to this polished display of hundreds of found items, Junk Pirate will feature a unique art sales method: Roll The Dice For Your Price. In a process developed during Pete Glover’s first found art exhibition in 2006, many of the framed assemblages will have their prices determined from a single roll of a predetermined set of dice. It is a transaction procedure that also, much like the exhibition itself, celebrates chance. The artist, gallery, and buyer are all duty-bound to honor the dice, which can result in some rowdy art business.

The opening reception of Pete Glover’s Junk Pirate is on Saturday, May 29^th. Additional events in conjunction with the Oakland Art Murmur (on the first Friday in June and July) will feature an interactive found slide show, special discounts on Junk Pirate merchandise, and the debut of the latest issue of Junk Pirate zine.

The Compound Gallery inaugurates its new, expanded quarters with work by two artist-residents, Alissa Goss and Tallulah Terryll, in a show aptly entitled Round Rhythm. Goss’ rounded, biomorphic ceramics are covered with nodules, suggesting animal skins or seed pods, while Terryll’s abstract paintings depict layers of gridded circles, like stains from pallets of damaged bottles. The formal resemblance is clear, but there’s emotional common ground in these reticent, elegant works — perhaps. Both artists consider nature, but from antithetical yet complementary points of view; both are uninterested in straight representation, but allow subjectivity and improvisation to shape the process and the work.

Goss explores the ideas of shelter and protection available through the contraries of solitude and sociability. She writes: “I do not work from reference material, as I am not interested in representing actual existing things. I do, however, find inspiration in naturally occurring repetitive patterns in cells, spores, bacteria, disease, flora and fungi. These influences are abstracted and recreated into intimate objects and presented for close observation. … I explore the ideas of home and domesticity in my works.” Her shell-like, gourd-like forms, transfixed and protected by spikes, filaments, stalks, and flagelli, “purposefully” inhabit their environments. Some resemble the embryonic blastulas and gastrulas, hinting at growth and mutation; others (”Continental”) seem to have succumbed to invasion; still others (”Mothership,” “Survey: Topographical Study”) “live” in dialogue with other members of the same rudimentary, preconscious, instinctive species.

Terryll’s paintings seem to grow, like Goss’ sculptures, through accretion. Her overlaid planes of stenciled circles generate irregular, lobed, even floral, geometric shapes that may suggest Frank Stella’s Protractor series, or Valerie Jaudon’s Pattern and Decoration paintings, with their common interlaced woven/plaited forms combating an insistently flat, steamrolled pictorial space. Where Terryll differs from the hard-edged painters is in her painterly treatment of planes, with the watercolored shapes defined by the overlapping of disks (or oeillades, glimpses) appearing both aqueous and aerial — porous, breathing products of nature rather than artifacts constructed with drafting instruments, masking tape, and paint rollers. It might be an over-interpretation based on too much TV drama to see in such liquid-sample arrays a metaphor for perception and analysis. If that interpretation holds any water, however, the paintings become depictions of accidental discoveries and even creative epiphanies, like Nauman’s sculpture of the space beneath a chair. If not, they’re still process-based abstractions of beauty.

Barbara Holmes:
The tarnished, stained, devalued, and discarded make a comeback in “The International Color Reference Series”.  These pieces have been plucked-up, rescued, and recontextualized.  For this show, reclaimed cultural objects that lack their original luster are paired with paint chip color samples.  Ever wonder exactly what “Countrified Blue” means, better yet what it looks like?  All, some, or nothing will be explained.

Marie Reich:
This work is about resourcefulness and chance. My contributions to Lo-Lustre were created with found objects, found fabric, and used clothing. Altered patterns, split-ends, and making low or no cost art are direct influences. Making art out of what I have on hand creates built-in limitations, as the supply of a certain fabric is not endless, and helps me take risks, as the materials don’t cost anything.

Christopher Romer’s new exhibit, 3AM: Under the Full Moon, includes an entirely fresh collection of pieces.  Representing a California debut for the artist, the show consists of a series of works—each one an autonomous piece—that read as a kind of landscape or strange world when grouped together.

The new collection also plays on the total volume notion: objects are suspended from the ceiling, attached to the walls, and placed on the floor, as if the viewer were floating through an aquarium or staring into a tidal pool.  Bill Van Siclen of the Providence Journal recently hailed Romer’s skill as a craftsman and finesse as an artist when he wrote: “Romer manages to cross a number of hotly contested art-world boundaries — between art and craft, painting and sculpture, abstraction and realism — without breaking a sweat.”  And Romer does not let up here: one of the two floor pieces, titled “The Woods are Full of Them,” resembles a very large hobbyhorse or confidence decoy, which has been rolled in on wheels. The viewer is at once met with a California redwood burl, married to a number of painted, turned masses of New England beechwood.  The burl’s once rough and jagged edges—the inheritance from a logger’s cuts years ago—have been smoothed over and filled in, added to and subtracted from.

There is no specific hint of narrative in this piece, but somehow we read a landscape in it—or more precisely a pondscape with lily buds springing from the tuber root and its surrounding, swirling ecosystem.  From one vantage point, this is indeed a pondscape.  Yet taking a few steps back, we now tell ourselves it could be some nameless corporal form—the bulk and flesh of it suggesting an arresting, dozing farm animal.

This Long Road is a show of individual works as well as collaborative pieces, made by Ben Belknap, Derek Weisberg, and Crystal Morey. All three artists were schoolmates at the California College of Arts and Crafts where a relationship began rooted in the love of figurative sculpture. Each artist has their own interpretation and style of the body as well as emotional content behind the work. In “This Long Road’ the artists will each represent their own work, and then explore the wonder, innovation, and trials of working together on a larger project.

Our featured artists work in a variety of mediums (ceramic, printmaking, painting, collage, digital prints, etc.) and most of them live and work in Oakland or San Francisco. Adrian Van Allen’s art transcribes the lost history of science. She recreates her own scientific methods, collections, and displays that parallel current and historical research in science and technology. For Anatomies,  she will install an evolutionary timeline of animal skeletons. The prints and bones are arranged using a system described in Pliny the Elder’s Natural History – where creatures are organized by the type of locomotion. A unicorn skull is the centerpiece of the collection.

Kari Marboe’s work depicts medical narratives of family and community members through a series of multifaceted portraits of failed anatomical structures. Anatomies features two groups of Marboe’s work, the first uses the intimate medium of clay to create internal portraits of family members, the second is comprised of stories from friends and the news media and is depicted with biologic organs and glass cubes. Each series seeks to explore both the emotional and physical aspects of medical experiences.
