Artist Talk with David Fullarton
Sunday, December 10th at 4pm
October 21st – December 10th The Compound Gallery, Emeryville, CA.
Join us for a casual artist talk with David Fullarton on Sunday, December 10th at 4pm. Treats and Libations will be served.
David Fullarton’s seventh solo show at the Compound Gallery is his first to feature work created since he plummeted headlong into his sixth decade as a human being. Given that fact, it is perhaps unsurprising that he defines the overarching theme of the show as “a wry reminder that no matter how bad things may seem, they can always get far worse.” This exhibition constitutes the latest chapter in Mr. Fullarton’s ongoing droll dissection of the absurdity of our modern malaise. Deploying his trademark dark humor and ruthless wit, his work laughs in the face of looming catastrophe and ridicules the disappointing reality of diminished contemporary existence. “It’s all about hopelessness, regret, despair and disappointment, but in a fun way.” is his acerbic assessment of the work currently adorning the gallery’s walls. So, take a well-earned break from the relentlessness of our daily struggle, enjoy a little chuckle at the ridiculousness of our shared predicament, and then prepare yourself for the next onslaught.
David Fullarton is a Scottish born, San Francisco based visual artist who creates mixed media works that combine images with text. He finds inspiration in the often-overlooked minutiae of daily existence and the ways ordinary people manage to eke joy and meaning out of the mundane. Creating drawings that function as small vignettes, and feature a forlorn cast of misfits and reprobates, he employs uncompromising wit and dark humor to ruthlessly skewer contemporary neuroses. In the process he explores the human condition, emphasizing the shared humanity in our individual struggles and pleasures.
