Familiar Comforts: New paintings by Meredith Steele

“I seek to uncover and record the subtle patterns of everyday life, revealing the charming qualities I find hidden in plain sight. Whether it’s the reassuring presence of a local landmark or the calm order of a drugstore aisle, these recognizable spaces serve as anchors, offering relief and stability in an unpredictable world. Through layers of color—both observed and invented—I infuse my own sensibility into these common subjects. My hope is that viewers will be inspired to rediscover the beauty in their own surroundings and find, both there and within these paintings, familiar comforts.”

Meredith is a painter originally from North Carolina who relocated to Oakland in 2009, where she currently lives and works. She has a BFA from the Savannah College of Art and Design and an MFA from Winthrop University. After teaching high school art for twenty years, she now paints full-time. Her studio assistant is an unhelpful but supportive 60-lb doodle named Ferris.
