Statement from Guy Colwell:
Since the Vietnam War era, when I was jerked out of a lazy abstract expressionist approach to art while responding to the social, political and creative turmoil of the times, I have thought of myself primarily as a Social Realist. But I have also authored at least 800 pages of comic book/graphic novel stories and art over the years. The powerful influence of comic books, comic strips, cartoon animation and the need to find some comedy within all the grim reality with which my work attempts to grapple, there are interwoven clear satirical, sardonic, sarcastic and surreal flavors that show through. This aspect of what I do has led me to redefine myself a little more broadly with the term Figurative Social Surrealist. While philosophically I feel a sort of duty to do art that is reality-based and engages pictorially in public discourse about war and peace, freedom and repression, poverty and wealth, the struggle for survival and preserving a livable planet, I do my best not to be overcome by pessimism and cynicism. I feel messages about the direction that humanity is taking have more impact if they can be both entertaining and universal. I don’t know if my art can change the world, but at least I can hope that a little compassion for our bumbling species by a bumbling artist can be discerned in these images.
